Drinking such large quantities of alcohol can overwhelm the body’s ability to break down and clear alcohol from the bloodstream. This leads to rapid increases in BAC and significantly impairs brain and other bodily functions. As suggested by Franchi et al. [28], new methods have been introduced to improve the general knowledge about suicide epidemiology. One of these is psychological autopsy, developed in the United cymbalta alcohol States and a few other countries (primarily Nordic) and introduced in France, including Lyon, in the 1990s.

The results of our research highlight just how needed these measures are in our society, but prevention requires change at both the individual and systemic level. There are well-established links between alcohol and cancer, heart disease and violence. Alcohol also undermines mental health, with links to depression and anxiety. However, more investigation is required before making any statements on the link between alcohol and suicide. It is dangerous to assume that an unconscious person will be fine by sleeping it off.
1. Characteristics of Articles Included in the Systematic Review
The more you drink, especially in a short period of time, the greater your risk of alcohol poisoning. Alcohol poisoning is a serious — and sometimes deadly — result of drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time. Trends in Mortality From Drug Poisonings, Suicide, and Alcohol-Induced Deaths in the United States From 2000 to 2017
The selected studies offer a snapshot of toxicological findings of autopsies in cases of suicide by self-poisoning worldwide. Significant differences between substances used in low-income and Western countries confirmed previous literature data. In rural areas and Asian countries, most suicides by poisoning occur mainly through the use of pesticides such as organophosphates and carbamates.
4. Study Selection and Data Collection Process
- In the past 20 years, a decrease in deaths due to pesticide poisoning has been observed (from around 260,000 a year to 160,000 a year).

It is quite common that a drunk person drinks various poisonous liquids, in the belief that these are alcoholic drinks. This happens when poisonous liquids are stored in bottles with labels of vodkas, wines, or other alcoholic drinks. Additionally, a wrong combination of drugs, especially prescribed by several doctors, can cause a strong toxic effect that is dangerous to health and life [22]. Our study indicates that, in the analyzed observation period, alcohol was frequently responsible for intentional (suicidal) (Table 5) and unintentional deaths as the cause of poisonings (Table 6).
They are often described as an “external cause of death,” which is imprecise and untrue [4]. Suicide is a global phenomenon that results from a complex interaction between risk factors and triggers, including alcohol and drugs [1]. Consciousness disorders caused by alcohol consumption or the use of other psychoactive substances are observed in 25%–50% of all suicide victims [2]. Out of 743 toxicological autopsies, 28 (3.7%) indicated poison-related suicides and13% indicated suicides not poison-related. Toxicological analyses on blood, urine, and vitreous humor revealed that 70% of the cases had involved drugs of abuse (morphine and psychostimulants) and ethanol. Holmgren et al. [35] analyzed a case history of autopsies in suicides from 1998 to 2007 and found that 2462 (22%) of the suicides had been committed by consuming poison.
Differences by Population Characteristics
Antiepileptic, sedative-hypnotic, anti-parkinsons, and psychotropic drugs, not elsewhere classified, as well as other unspecified drugs, medicaments, and biological substances were the second cause of death as a result of intentional self-poisoning (Table 5). Poisoning by and exposure to other unspecified drugs, medicaments, and biological substances, as well as poisoning by and exposure to other gases and vapors, were the second cause of deaths as a result of undetermined intent (Table 6). The statistics for 2017–2020 revealed the emergence of new substances affecting the state of consciousness of suicide victims, and they showed the impact of new psychoactive substances, such as narcotic drugs and drugs (Table 3). It was observed that the number of suicide attempts committed under the influence of these substances has been increasing.

Age-standardized incidence rates and annual percentage changes (APCs) in rates were estimated.
In most eastern European countries, according to the WHO mortality database on methods of suicide [54], poisoning is the third-leading cause of suicide death, after suicide by hanging and suicide by using firearms. Pharmaceutical agents are the most frequent victims of intentional suicide in this area. No autopsies related to suicide by poisoning were found in this area and other missing geographic regions according to our research and selection criteria.
